SNORING and OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA

Snoring happens when airflow through the nose and mouth is obstructed during sleep, with Obstructive Sleep Apnea being a common condition where the throat muscles relax intermittently, blocking the airway. This sleep disorder involves repeated episodes of apnea or hypopnea caused by airway obstruction, often going unnoticed by those affected, and not everyone who snores has Obstructive Sleep Apnea. We provide ENT condition treatments in areas including Sri Nagar Colony, Somajiguda, Ameerpet, Madhura Nagar, Panjagutta, SR Nagar, and Yousufguda in Hyderabad.

Common symptoms include:

  1. Loud snoring
  2. Waking up with a dry throat
  3. Morning headaches
  4. Feeling sleepy during the day
  5. A quick shift in mood
  6. Memory issues

Causes

  1. Being obese: being obese slightly increases the chances of facing the risk of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. The excess amount of fat around the upper airway interrupts the breathing process.
  2. Medical conditions: Conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, hormonal disorders, asthma, stroke, and polycystic ovary syndrome may make you vulnerable to Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
  3. Narrow Throat: This condition is seen in children where the increased size of tonsils or adenoids blocks the respiratory tract and causes Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
  4. Regular Smoking: Due to increased fluid retention in the upper airway, smokers have a higher risk of getting affected by Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
  5. Size of Neck: people with an underdeveloped jaw and a crowded pharynx are prone to have OPA conditions.
  6. Ageing: Obstructive Sleep Apnea or snoring is most commonly seen in elderly people and starts to lay off later.

FACIAL PARALYSIS

This condition causes weakness and downward drooping of the facial muscles, which can affect one or both sides, often resulting from facial nerve infections or tumors in the head or neck. The most common cause of such paralysis is Bell's palsy, and its severity ranges from mild numbness to complete paralysis of the face.

Some of the common symptoms are:

  1. In Bell’s palsy, the symptoms develop very fast within 48 hours.
  2. The difficulties faced by the person are weakness in the facial muscles and inability to open the eyes.
  3. Affected side of the face may cause irritation in the eye and increased tear production.

Causes

  1. Bell’s palsy occurs when a nerve in the facial muscles gets compressed.
  2. This condition could be a result of virus infection which can occur at any age.
  3. Though the exact reason for this condition is clearly known, many experts relate this condition with infection caused by viruses such as herpes simplex, Infectious Mononucleosis, Mumps, Flu, Adenovirus, German Measles, Hand-Foot-and-Mouth disease etc.
  4. Bell’s palsy occurs more often in people who already have medical conditions like high blood pressure, pregnant women in their third trimester, and people with diabetes and upper respiratory infection.

People with Bell’s palsy when treated can see visible recovery in six months. But people with severe conditions might find this irreversible and may result in involuntary contraction of facial muscles.

VERTIGO

Dizziness can result from an inner ear issue or BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo), characterized by symptoms such as motion sickness, vomiting, faintness, and a feeling of unsteadiness, which tend to worsen when walking, standing up, or moving the head. This condition occurs when delicate parts of the inner ear are damaged and fail to properly relay information to the brain. Vertigo can be classified as peripheral, originating from inner ear problems, or central, stemming from brain issues like trauma or stroke. It is more common in individuals over 65 and may also occur in women during pregnancy, while factors such as dehydration, iron deficiency, and carbon monoxide poisoning can also trigger vertigo.

Symptoms that indicate vertigo are:

  1. Nausea
  2. Balancing issues
  3. Motion sickness
  4. Blocked ears
  5. Tinnitus
  6. Headache

Other diseases that trigger Vertigo are:

BPPV: this happens when lying down or when turning in bed and while sitting up.

  1. Meniere’s disease causes fullness in the ear because of the fluid build-up in the ear.
  2. Cholesteatoma and Vestibular neuritis are other medical conditions that cause Vertigo.
  3. Other factors that cause Vertigo are migraine headaches, stroke, head injuries, diabetes, ear surgery, low blood pressure syphilis, multiple sclerosis, brain disease etc.

Some of the tests conducted to test this condition are:

  1. Romberg’s test
  2. Fukuda-unterberger’s test
  3. Head impulse test
  4. Vestibular test battery.
